Jiri Kylian's Car Men. Nederlands Dans Theater.
Author: Kylian, Jiri Published: 2008 A collaboration between Dutch film-maker Boris Paval Conen and Czech dance choreographer Jiri Kylián. Car Men is a charmingly unusual and visually stunning tragicomedy ballet based on Bizet's opera. Filmed on location at a coal mine in the Czech Republic, the ballet presents a trial of strength between the eternal temptress Carmen (Sabine Kupferberg), the infatuated Don José (Karel Hruska), the womaniser Escamillo (David Krügel) and the kindhearted Micaëla (Gioconda Barbuto) which culiminates in a race in cars made from scrap metal. The DVD also includes two short Kylián ballets, La Cathédrale Engloutie, set to Debussy's famous Prélude; and a solo for Sabine Kupferberg, Silent Cries which uses the same composer's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. Uncoded, for world-wide use on NTSC compatible equipment. |
