The arts at Dartington, 1940 - 1983.
Author: Cox , Peter Published: The story of how the author, Peter Cox, found himself in 1940 invited to join the Dartington Hall Arts Department to assist Christopher Martin, Dartington's first Arts Administrator, and how he stayed on to rebuild the Department after the war, working closely for more than twenty years with the two Dartington founders, Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst, exploring with them and others what forms of arts activity would thrive there in post war conditions. It was essentially a process of experimentation, learning by doing, and building on experience, all with the aim of creating a structure and an atmosphere in which professional artists, teachers, students, and amateur participants had the motivation and the resources to work together freely and creatively, at different levels and in a variety of partnerships. |
