Gayne. Larisa Tuisova, Alexander Rumyantsev, Gennady Gorbanev, Maris Korystin, Latvian Opera and Ballet Company.
Published: Despite a fine score from Aram Khachaturian, the original version of Gayne, telling of life and love on a collective farm, was never a great success. In the 1980 version recorded here, choreographer Boris Eifman re-worked the story to focus on the shifting relationships between the ballet's three protagonists. Amongst the bonus selections on the DVD are the original choreographer Nina Anisimova's 1942 last act, performed as a tribute to Khachaturian in 1961, and danced by a cast from the Bolshoi Ballet including the great Nina Timofeyva and Yuri Zhdanov.
