William Forsythe: From a Classical Position; Just Dancing Around.
Published: William Forsythe is acknowledged as one of the great choreographic talents of our time. In the first of these two films he, and his long-time collaborator Dana Caspersen, perform a duet conceived especially for the camera. From a Classical Position constitutes a one-off experience of Forsythe and Caspersen's work, giving dance lovers a unique vision of their art as choreographers, dancers, and now film-makers. The second film is a documentary: the director, Mike Figgis, spent six weeks at the Frankfurt Ballet where Forsythe was for some 20 years director. Here, Forsythe makes a clear and articulate case for his method of deconstructing classical ballet, while Figgis takes the role of fascinated outsider, pursuing his volatile subject with dogged enthusiasm. The documentary focuses on the build-up to the first performance of Forsythe's The Loss of Small Detail, and the soundtrack features both the avant-garde music of Thomas Willems and selections from Handel's Concerti Grossi. Coded for world-wide use on NTSC compatible equipment, except the USA and Canada, etc. In these regions, a multi-region DVD player will be needed to play the DVD successfully. |
