Dancing for Dollars: The Bolshoi in Vegas, The Kirov in Petersburg.
Published: In 1959, the Bolshoi Ballet's first visit to the USA was a political and artistic triumph. Thirty years later, an American promoter hopes to recreate the success by bringing the company to Las Vegas, but the venture is beset with problems from the start, and tensions mount as the Bolshoi become more and more bewildered by their lack of success. This richly entertaining documentary follows the ever more disastrous season. The second programme on the DVD follows the Kirov Ballet at the time of Oleg Vinogradov's final year as artistic director: as communism gives way to capitalism, Vinogradov and his associates are besieged by allegations of bribery and corruption. Through the personal recollections of workers, dancers, and critics, specially filmed backstage footage and previously unseen archive material, a unique portrait emerges of the Kirov's changing fortunes.
