Persephone. Nicole Tibbels, Paul Groves, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus/Sir Andrew Davis.
Author: Stravinsky, Igor Published: 2004 Stravinsky's 1934 melodrama, combining spoken text (in French, by André Gide) with solo tenor, chorus, and orchestra. Originally staged for Ida Rubinstein with choreography by Kurt Jooss, it was later memorably choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton for the divine Svetlana Beriosova. The disc also includes Dukas' Polyeucte overture, with the same orchestra conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier. Both performances were recorded, live, at the 2003 BBC Promenade Concerts, before a commendably silent audience. The CD booklet provides the full French text of Persephone, together with translations into English and German. |
