Gumboots, an explosion of spirit and song.
Published: 2002 Gumboots is an irresistible song and dance extravaganza, based on the traditional Gumboot dancing from the gold mines of South Africa: forbidden to speak to each other, the slave workers developed ways of sending messages by slapping their gumboots (worn to protect their legs from infected water in the dark flooded mines) and rattling their ankle chains. 12 young South African men perform this uplifting show, each with their own unique story of post-Apartheid life. Dressed in the traditional mining uniform of baggy pants, Wellington boots and bandannas, the dancers set the stage alight with their vitality, enthusiasm and energy. [The DVD version includes an extra 53 minute documentary, and is coded for all regions except the USA and Canada.] |
