Author: Gliere, Reinhold Published: Forty-five minutes of music from the 1949 Bolshoi Ballet, based on Pushkin, arranged by the composer into a symphonic suite. The ballet tells the story of a St. Petersburg youth whose beloved drowns in the River Neva. Driven to despair, he taunts the bronze mounted statue of the city's founder, Peter the Great, but the statue comes to life, and chases him through the streets and kills him. (The CD also contains a performance of Gliere's Horn Concerto.) |
