Cover imageConverging movements: Modern dance and Jewish culture at the 92nd Street Y.

Author: Jackson, Naomi

Published: 2000

Many of the most important figures in modern dance have had their works premiered at theatre of the Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew Association (known familiarly as the Y) located at 92nd Street and Lexington Avenue in New York, but until now no-one has thought to ask why this should have been so. In this study Naomi Jackson shows how the Y's particular concept of Jewishness laid the groundwork for the establishment of a centre for dance in the 1930s.
