Die Sacharoffs, two dancers within the Blaue Reiter Circle.
Author: Peter, Frank-Manuel & Rainer Stamm Published: 2002 Around 1910 Munich was a centre of modern art. The expatriate Russian modern dancer Alexander Sacharoff belonged to a circle that included Kandinsky, Marc, Munter, Jawlensky, Werefkin, Kogan, Bechtejeff, and Mogilewsky. These artists enthusiastically greeted the reforms he introduced to the art of dance, while the critics were shocked by his androgynous manner. At the same time, a seventeen year old Munich girl, Clotilde von Derp began to attract attention as the first German modern dancer. In 1913 she began to perform with Sacharoff, and in 1919 they were married. This large, beautifully produced, and richly illustrated volume documents in detail the Sacharoffs' life and work. Most of the text is in German and English, although sections of it are in German only. There are nearly 300 monochrome illustrations, and 32 pages in full colour. |
