Cover imageOf another world, dancing between dream and reality.

Author: Dithmer (editor), Monna

Published: 2002

A selection of essays published in honour of Professor Emeritus Erik Aschengreen, on the occasion of his retirement as head of Dance History and Aesthetics at the University of Copenhagen.

'Another world' is often thought of as the fairy-tale universe inhabited by classical ballet. But does not all dance hover on the brink of other dimensions of reality? This is one of the fundamental questions explored in the anthology. In essays and interviews, a wide range of topics is considered, including the broken marriage between music and dance, Bournonville's ideal critic, Nijinsky's faun versus the romantic dream of elusive women, dance as a gender motif in the paintings of the Danish Golden Age, and the beast in dance, from Swan Lake to butoh.

Contributors include Ivor Guest, Deborah Jowitt, Nikolaj Hubbe, Ebbe Mork, Monna Dithmer, Lena Hammergren, and Stephanie Jordan.
