The golden age of costume and set design for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, 1938 to 1944.
Author: Spangenberg, Kristin L Published: 2002 The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo followed Diaghilev's approach in making the scenic designer of a ballet a full creative partner in its development. This volume, based on an exhibition held at the Cincinnati Art Museum in 2002, includes the designs of fourteen artists for nineteen new ballets commissioned between 1938 and 1944, the early period of the company's history when it possessed many brilliant dancers and two major choreographers, George Balanchine and Leonide Massine. The large format, 140 page book, includes 42 full page full colour costume design reproductions, 21 black and white photographs, and texts by Jack Anderson, Janet Light, and Malcolm McCormick. The artists represented include Boris Aronson, Christian Berard, Etienne de Beaumont, Eugene Berman, Salvador Dali, Nathalie Gontcharova, Kermit Love, Raoul Pene du Bois, Oliver Smith, and Pavel Tchelitchev. |
