Louange de la Danse (In praise of the dance).
Author: de Montagut, Barthelemy Published: 2000 A plagiarised version of de Lauze's manuscript on the history and practice of dance. De Lauze had intended to present his original to George Villiers, Marquess of Buckingham, but was forestalled by de Montagut who copied out an early draft and presented it to Buckingham as his own work. This heinous deed remained without serious consequences for the perpetrator, who embarked on a dazzling career as a dancer and director of masques, while the injured de Lauze resorted to the printing press, and in his Apologie de la danse of 1623 produced what is perhaps the first instance of an author publicly and in print accusing a contemporary of piracy. The present volume includes de Montagut's complete French text, with an English translation, the relevant sections of de Lauze's Apologie (untranslated), and detailed introductions on piracy, plagiarism, and the dance style of the period. |
